The Project

The goal of this project was to develop a single set of instructions for the trained operators of a panoramic dental x-ray machine.

Key Stakeholders

The primary users are trained technicians. Secondary users for the machine include nurses who may assist in positioning a patient.

Requirements

 1. Ensure the patient does not see the operator referencing the instructions.
 2. Reduce word count to reduce translation costs.
 3. Solution must fit in the space above the control panel.

My Process

Using the machine (without activating the x-ray) helped me design the instructions. Through interviews with operators, I was able to identify key pain points.

One recurring theme was that they didn't use the machine very often so they often referred to the instructions. The challenge is that it makes the patients nervous seeing them look through the instructions.

The Result

This set of instructions, along with the accompanying set for an accessory arm, garnered highly positive feedback from our customers.

The booklet is a single fold, laminated page. It opens reverse from English so patients do not see the operator reading them. With the simple construction and lack of need for translation services, we were able to save close to $90,000 on printing costs in the first year.
